About The Role This is an exciting opportunity to be part of our School Attendance Support Service (SASS) Team as a School Attendance Support Officer. The successful candidate will join a multi-disciplinary team working with schools, young people, families and other agencies to identify barriers to attendance and causes of school absence. We are looking for someone interested in joining on a fixed-term basis (for 12 months) to work with refugee and asylum seeker families. The Team is responsible for promoting equality of opportunity for all children to enable access to appropriate educational entitlement. About The Team You’ll Be Working In The key purpose of the School Attendance Support Service (SASS) Team relates directly to our statutory responsibilities in line with The Education Act 1996 related to children not attending school. This sits firmly with our duty to ensure that children in our borough exceed their full potential. This is a busy, important, and challenging role that would suit someone keen to make a direct difference working with a diverse range of stakeholders – principally young people, their parents and carers, schools, and local authority support services. You will work with the School Attendance Support Service Team Leader and alongside our Access to Education team, Elective Home Education, Refugee and Asylum Seekers services, and School Admissions teams.   • Being a clear communicator, proactive problem solver and collaborative worker with a clear focus on the importance of children being able to access education.
  • Sound knowledge of the legislative framework within which the School Attendance Support Service and other Local Authority functions in relation to school attendance, and our work supporting refugees and asylum seekers.
  • Detailed knowledge of Child Protection issues in relation to attendance and experience of ensuring safeguarding and positive outcomes for young people.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to communicate with a range of individuals including young people, parents and professionals in health, social work, police and third sector organisations.
  • Ability to promote inter-agency co-operation to ensure a holistic approach to pupil out of school issues, engaging a wide range of professionals in complex casework working with both children and adults as required, to support the team around the child/family process.
  • Enhanced DBS check is required.
