The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) is one of the world’s leading public health universities. Our mission is to improve health and health equity in the UK and worldwide; working in partnership to achieve excellence in public and global health research, education and translation of knowledge into policy and practice.

The Department of Infection Biology brings together pathogen molecular biology and immunology and infection research across the School. The Department benefits from state of the art facilities and strong collaborations, many of which are with partners in disease endemic countries. We study the molecular biology and genetics of pathogens and interaction with their hosts, to improve understanding and control of infectious diseases and to understand the complex and dynamic ways by which pathogens modulate virulence and interact with the human host.

We are seeking to appoint a Research Fellow in Genomics to work on research projects aiming to apply molecular biology techniques, genomic sequencing, and bioinformatic and population genomic analytical strategies to sequence data of hosts, vectors, and pathogens across a range of infectious diseases, including malaria. Specific projects will include to understand drug resistance in Plasmodium malaria parasites and insecticide resistance in mosquitos. Functional laboratory work will be performed to validate the resulting molecular insights. The role will involve sharing bioinformatic knowledge with others, including through training and mentoring of group members and participating in capacity strengthening workshops as part of collaborative projects, leading to high impact publications and the submission of proposals for follow-up funding.

The successful applicants will have a PhD in the broad area of molecular biology with excellent computational skills, and demonstrated experience of writing scientific publications. Further particulars are included in the job description.

The post is full time 35 hours per week, 1.0 FTE and fixed-term until 01 April 2025. The post is funded by the MRC and is available immediately.

The salary will be on the Academic Pathway salary scale, Grade 6 in the range £43,947 - £49,908 per annum (inclusive of London Weighting). The post will be subject to the LSHTM terms and conditions of service. Annual leave entitlement is 30 working days per year, pro rata for part time staff. In addition to this there are discretionary “Wellbeing Days”. Membership of the Pension Scheme is available. The post is based in London at LSHTM.
