An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Insectary Assistant to join the Vector Biology department at LSTM. The department is one of the largest of its kind with a broad portfolio of research and technical assistance activities targeted at improving the control of insect-borne diseases. Our multidisciplinary team collaborates on cutting-edge projects that have the potential to make a real difference in global health.


Role overview


As an Insectary Maintenance Assistant, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the smooth operation and upkeep of our insectary facility. The Mosquito Symbiosis and Infection (Mossi) lab explores microbial control approaches to reduce the burden on arboviral disease and malaria. The role will involve supporting researchers in the department by rearing mosquitoes and perform culture-based approaches to investigate gut symbionts in mosquitoes.


Key to this role is:


  • BSc in Biological Science or science related subject
  • Experience with manipulating and rearing mosquitoes
  • Experience or knowledge of standard microbiological techniques

The ideal candidate will have excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability and interest in working as an integral and cooperative member of a multi-disciplinary research team, and be able to demonstrate the following:


  • Experience of working within a research laboratory & experience of standard laboratory protocols
  • Maintenance of laboratory data, book and record keeping experience
  • Experience of conducting scientific experiments
  • Experience of working to targets and deadlines
  • Experience of working to health and safety regulations and legal requirements and writing of relevant risk assessments (desirable)
